EXPERIENCES IN THE MENTAL HEALTH FIELD

In 2016, I became the Founder & President of a women's mental health organization at York University known as Women's Mental Health Talks. For 3 years I applied a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive and multicultural framework to co-facilitate support groups for women experiencing mental health challenges and trauma caused by social inequities and sexual violence. Being in community with women from diverse backgrounds and witnessing the ways they developed greater self-empowerment in ways that impacted their communities was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

I was the first student to serve on the Board of Trustees at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), Canada`s largest mental health hospital. In this role, I learned from diverse mental health leaders about providing mental health care in ways that address social inequities.

I have been trained as a Mindfulness Meditation Facilitator and Leadership Coach through the Faculty of Health at York University. I have over 3 years of supporting adults with enhancing their psychological wellness, self-compassion and self-awareness through the practice of meditation. As a Leadership Coach, I created and facilitated workshops and trainings on topics that supported people's leadership development through addressing mental health, self-care, sexual violence and social equity.

I have also worked with people who are terminally ill in hospice care and have supported people in distress as a Crisis Line volunteer.

I completed my psychotherapy internship through working with people from a trauma-informed, somatic, and anti-oppressive framework. I have also worked as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) in a clinic supporting people with addressing their communication and leadership challenges by attending to their mental health and trauma healing.

RESEARCH

For 3 years I was a Research Assistant in a Feminist Psychology lab at York University where I worked with a team to explore the ways that intersectional oppressions (i.e colonialism, patriarchy, racism, sexism, etc) impacted women throughout history and in the current day.

I completed my Honors Thesis research project on the topic of South Asian mental health. Under the supervision of Dr. Alexandra Rutherford, I explored the ways that cultural values impact South Asian people's mental health and the ways they navigate different cultural expectations.

For my Psychotherapy internship, I completed a 190-hour research project that explored the ways that somatic (body-based) psychotherapy can be valuable for helping people heal and release trauma caused by systemic oppression. This research project was created into a workshop that was presented to the Ontario Society of Registered Psychotherapists.
