My Approach
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Relationships, Sexuality & Intimacy
What is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is an approach to therapy that helps us understand the deeper emotional and unconscious patterns influencing how we relate to ourselves and others. Rather than focusing only on changing a behaviour or resolving the immediate problem, psychodynamic therapy explores why certain relationship patterns, emotional reactions, and struggles with sexuality or intimacy keep repeating, even when we consciously want things to be different.
Our relationships are shaped by more than what is happening in the present moment. Early relationships, attachment experiences, family dynamics, past relationships, trauma, cultural expectations, gender roles, and messages about sexuality can all influence what we come to expect from ourselves and others. Over time, some of these experiences become internalized and operate outside of our conscious awareness.
This can show up in many different ways: repeatedly feeling attracted to emotionally unavailable partners, becoming anxious when someone pulls away, shutting down during conflict, struggling to communicate your needs, feeling disconnected from your sexuality or desire, experiencing shame around sex, or finding that the same arguments continue to happen in your relationship despite your best efforts to resolve them.
Psychodynamic Therapy for
Relationship Challenges
In psychodynamic relationship therapy, we become curious about the deeper meaning underneath these patterns.
Instead of asking only, “How do I stop doing this?” we might also explore:
Why does this particular situation affect me so strongly? What does this conflict bring up emotionally? Where did I learn what love, safety, closeness, or rejection feels like? Why do I keep finding myself in similar relationship dynamics?
Developing greater awareness of these patterns can create more space between what we feel and how we respond. Over time, this can support healthier boundaries, more honest communication, greater emotional intimacy, and new ways of relating to ourselves and the people we love.
Psychodynamic Therapy for Sexuality & Intimacy
Our sexuality also has a psychological history.
Messages from family, culture, religion, gender expectations, past relationships, trauma, body image, and previous sexual experiences can influence how safe we feel experiencing pleasure, desire, vulnerability, and sexual intimacy.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy provides a non-shaming space to explore these experiences and understand what may be happening beneath concerns such as low sexual desire, differences in desire between partners, sexual shame, difficulty communicating sexual needs, performance anxiety, emotional disconnection, or challenges with intimacy.
The goal is not to tell you what your sexuality or relationship should look like. Instead, therapy can help you understand the experiences and beliefs that have shaped your relationship with intimacy so that you can develop a more authentic, connected, and fulfilling relationship with yourself, your sexuality, and your intimate relationships.
Going Beyond the Surface
Ultimately, psychodynamic psychotherapy is about understanding the “why” beneath the pattern.
By bringing unconscious patterns into greater awareness, we can begin responding to ourselves and our relationships with more choice, curiosity, and compassion—rather than automatically repeating ways of relating that may no longer serve us.
I integrate psychodynamic psychotherapy with attachment-based, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and sex therapy approaches to support individuals and couples navigating relationship challenges, sexuality, intimacy, and deeper self-understanding.
